Word to PDF Converter
Convert a Word .docx file to PDF in your browser — headings, lists, tables and images included. Free, no upload, no sign-up.
What is a Word to PDF converter?
A Word to PDF converter turns an editable Microsoft Word document (.docx) into a PDF — a fixed-layout file that looks the same on every phone, computer and printer and cannot be changed by accident. This free Word to PDF tool does the conversion inside your browser: the .docx file is opened and read on your own device, the PDF is built there, and nothing is uploaded to a server. That makes it a practical choice for resumes, offer letters, invoices, assignments and other documents you would rather not hand to an online service.
The converter keeps the structure of your document — headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, images and clickable links — and in most cases produces a PDF with real, selectable and searchable text.
How to convert Word to PDF
- Select your .docx file — click the upload box or drag the file onto it. Files created in Word 2007 or later, Google Docs (File → Download → .docx), LibreOffice or WPS Office all work.
- Choose the page setup — A4, Letter or Legal, portrait or landscape, and Normal, Moderate or Narrow margins.
- Pick a body font and PDF type — Auto is right for most people: it creates selectable text and only switches to image pages when your document contains characters the standard PDF fonts cannot show.
- Click Convert to PDF — the converter libraries load (once), the document is read and the PDF is generated, usually within a few seconds.
- Check and download — review the page count, file size and content preview, read any notes about simplified formatting, then click Download PDF or open it in a new tab.
How the conversion works
A .docx file is a ZIP archive of XML files. The tool uses the open-source mammoth.js library to read that XML and turn it into clean HTML: Word heading styles become headings, list paragraphs become lists, tables become tables and embedded pictures become images. Your browser then lays out that HTML at the exact width of the printable area, and jsPDF draws every line of text, table border and picture at the position the browser calculated. Page breaks are placed between lines, table rows and images, so a line of text is never sliced in half.
Worked example of the page geometry: an A4 page is 595.28 × 841.89 points (1 point = 1/72 inch). With Normal margins of 72 points (1 inch) on each side, the text area is 595.28 − 2 × 72 = 451.28 points wide and 841.89 − 2 × 72 = 697.89 points tall, about 159 × 246 mm. Body text is set at 11 pt. In our test, a report with a title, two heading levels, a bulleted and a numbered list, a 4-row table, a 400 × 300 px picture and 25 paragraphs of notes became a 3-page A4 PDF with Normal margins and a 4-page PDF in landscape, because a landscape page has less height for text. Every word, including the bold and italic phrases and the table figures, could be selected and searched in the result.
Selectable text vs image pages: standard PDF fonts (Helvetica and Times) only cover Western European characters. If your document contains anything else — for example the rupee sign ₹ or Hindi, Gujarati, Arabic or Chinese text — the Auto setting renders each page as a high-resolution image instead, so the text looks exactly right but cannot be selected or searched. You can choose either type yourself.
Common uses
- Resumes and cover letters — recruiters and job portals prefer PDF because it cannot be edited and opens the same everywhere.
- College assignments and project reports — many submission portals accept only PDF.
- Invoices, quotations and letters — send a fixed copy to clients by email or WhatsApp.
- Government and bank forms — fill in a Word template, then convert it for upload.
- Converting on a phone or a shared computer where you cannot install Word or a PDF printer.
Tips for the best result
- Use Word's built-in Heading 1/2/3 styles for headings — they convert to proper headings; text that is only made bigger and bold becomes a normal paragraph.
- Insert pictures in line with text rather than floating, and avoid text boxes for important content.
- If the PDF must be small, compress large photos in Word first or run the result through our Compress PDF tool.
- Need page numbers or a watermark? Add them afterwards with PDF Page Numbers or PDF Watermark.
- For documents in Hindi or other Indian languages, keep PDF type on Auto or Image pages.
Limitations & notes
This is a structure-based converter, not a copy of Microsoft Word's layout engine, so some things are simplified. Exact fonts are replaced by Helvetica/Arial or Times. Text alignment (centred, right-aligned, justified), indents, line spacing, highlight colours and custom paragraph spacing follow a clean default style. Headers, footers, footnote positions, page numbers, columns, text boxes, shapes, WordArt, charts and SmartArt are not reproduced, and text inside text boxes may be missing. Tables keep their rows and cells but not merged-cell layouts or shading. Page breaks are recalculated, so the page count can differ from Word.
Old binary .doc files (Word 97–2003) are not supported — open them in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save as .docx first. Password-protected documents cannot be opened, and pictures in EMF/WMF format are skipped. When the result must match Word exactly, use Word's own File → Save as PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Word to PDF converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, watermark or page limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so your document is not uploaded to MavexTech or any other server. Only the open-source converter libraries are downloaded from a public CDN.
Will the text in the PDF be selectable and searchable?
Yes, in Selectable text mode, which Auto uses whenever your document contains only Western European characters. If the document contains characters such as the rupee sign or Hindi text, Auto saves the pages as images so they display correctly; that text is then not selectable.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
No. Only .docx (Word 2007 and newer) is supported. Open the .doc file in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save or download it as .docx, and convert that file.
Why does my PDF look different from the Word document?
The tool rebuilds the document from its structure. Headings, lists, tables, images, bold and italic are kept, but exact fonts, alignment, spacing, headers, footers, columns and text boxes are simplified, and page breaks are recalculated. For a pixel-perfect copy, use Save as PDF in Word itself.
Which page sizes and margins can I choose?
A4, Letter and Legal, in portrait or landscape, with Normal (1 inch), Moderate (0.75 inch) or Narrow (0.5 inch) margins.
Are images and tables included?
Yes. Pictures placed in the document (PNG, JPEG, GIF and similar) are included at their original pixel size (1 px = 0.75 pt), scaled down if they are larger than the page; a size you set by dragging the picture in Word is not kept. Tables keep their rows, cells and borders. EMF/WMF drawings and charts are not included.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. It works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Android and iPhone. Very long documents with many large images need more memory, so converting them on a computer is faster.
