What is a GST invoice generator?
A GST invoice generator is an online tool that creates a tax invoice in the format expected under India’s Goods and Services Tax. This MavexTech GST invoice generator works out the taxable value of every line after discount, decides automatically whether to charge CGST + SGST or IGST from the place of supply, adds a rate-wise tax summary, rounds the total, writes the amount in words and produces a clean A4 PDF you can email or print. It also checks GSTINs: the format, the state code and the 15th check character, which catches most typing mistakes. Everything happens in your browser — no account, no upload, no watermark.
How to create a GST invoice
- Enter your business details — name, address, GSTIN and state. A valid GSTIN fills in the state for you. Add a logo if you like.
- Enter the customer — name, billing address, GSTIN (leave it blank for an unregistered customer) and state. The place of supply follows the customer’s state; change it if goods are delivered elsewhere.
- Fill in the invoice number and date. Use a consecutive series such as INV/25-26/001, at most 16 characters.
- Add items with description, HSN or SAC code, quantity, rate, optional discount % and GST rate. Line amounts update as you type.
- Check the totals and preview, add bank details and notes, then click Download PDF or Print invoice.
How CGST, SGST and IGST are calculated
For each line, taxable value = quantity × rate − discount. If the place of supply is in the same state as the supplier, the supply is intra-state and the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST (UTGST in Union Territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh). If the place of supply is in another state, the supply is inter-state and the full rate is charged as IGST. Tax is rounded to the paisa per line, the invoice total is optionally rounded to the nearest rupee, and the difference is shown as “Round off”.
Worked example (the default invoice): a Pune business bills a Mumbai customer, so the supply is intra-state in Maharashtra.
- Line 1: 1 × ₹40,000 at 18% → taxable ₹40,000.00, CGST 9% ₹3,600.00, SGST 9% ₹3,600.00.
- Line 2: 1 × ₹5,999 with 10% discount → taxable ₹5,399.10, CGST ₹485.92, SGST ₹485.92.
- Taxable value ₹45,399.10 + CGST ₹4,085.92 + SGST ₹4,085.92 = ₹53,570.94. Rounded: ₹53,571.00 (round off +₹0.06), “Rupees Fifty Three Thousand Five Hundred Seventy One Only”.
- Change the customer state to Karnataka and the same invoice shows IGST 18% of ₹8,171.84 instead, with the same grand total.
What a GST tax invoice must contain
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists the particulars of a tax invoice. The main ones are:
- name, address and GSTIN of the supplier;
- a consecutive serial number of not more than 16 characters (letters, numerals, hyphen or slash), unique for the financial year, and the date of issue;
- name, address and GSTIN of a registered recipient; for an unregistered recipient, name and address (with state) where the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more;
- HSN code for goods or SAC for services, description, quantity, total value and taxable value after discount;
- rate and amount of tax (CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, cess), and the place of supply with state name for inter-state supplies;
- whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and the signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative.
GST rates from 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0)
After the 56th GST Council meeting, most goods and services moved to two main slabs of 5% and 18% from 22 September 2025, with a 40% rate for a short list of luxury and sin goods. Special rates continue, such as 3% for gold and silver and 0.25% for rough diamonds, and many essentials are exempt (0%). The rate dropdown offers 0, 0.25, 3, 5, 18 and 40%. Always confirm the rate for your HSN or SAC in the current rate notification; for a quick tax-on-price check you can also use the GST calculator.
Tips
- Keep one invoice series per financial year and never reuse a number.
- Use the correct HSN digits: 4 digits if your aggregate turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, 6 digits above that.
- Bill-to and ship-to in different states? Set the place of supply to where the goods are delivered.
- Sign the printed invoice, or sign the PDF digitally, before sending it.
Limitations and notes
This is a formatting aid, not accounting or GST filing software. It does not generate e-invoices (IRN and QR code), e-way bills, credit or debit notes, compensation cess or export invoices, and it does not file GSTR-1 for you. Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal. A GSTIN that passes the check digit can still be cancelled or belong to someone else; verify important GSTINs on the GST portal. The PDF uses a standard font, so ₹ is written as “Rs.”. The pdf-lib library is loaded from a public CDN; your invoice data never leaves your device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this GST invoice generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no invoice limit. The invoice is built in your browser, so customer names, GSTINs and amounts are not uploaded to any server.
When should I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
Charge CGST plus SGST (or UTGST) when the place of supply is in the same state or Union Territory as your registration. Charge IGST when the place of supply is in a different state. The tool compares your state with the place of supply and applies the right tax automatically.
How does the GSTIN check digit validation work?
The 15th character of a GSTIN is a check character calculated from the first 14 characters with a modulus 36 algorithm. The tool recalculates it and also checks the 2-digit state code and the PAN pattern, so most typing mistakes are caught. It cannot confirm that the GSTIN is active; use the GST portal for that.
What are the GST rates after 22 September 2025?
Most items now fall under 5% or 18%, a 40% rate applies to a small list of luxury and sin goods, gold and silver remain at 3%, rough diamonds at 0.25%, and many essentials are exempt. Check the current notification for the exact rate of your HSN or SAC code.
Can I make an invoice for an unregistered customer?
Yes. Leave the customer GSTIN blank and the invoice shows the customer as unregistered. If the taxable value is Rs. 50,000 or more, Rule 46 requires the customer's name and address, including the state, to be shown.
Is an invoice from this tool valid for e-invoicing?
No. Businesses that fall under e-invoicing must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN and QR code. This tool creates a regular tax invoice format and does not connect to any GST system.
How many items can I add to one invoice?
Up to 60 line items. Long invoices continue on additional A4 pages in the PDF, with the table header repeated and page numbers added at the bottom.
