Average Cost per Share

What is Stock Averaging?

Stock averaging means buying the same stock at different prices over time. Your effective per-share cost = total invested / total shares. Strategic averaging (rupee-cost averaging) smooths out market volatility — you buy more shares when price drops, fewer when price rises. Calculate to know: your real break-even price, when current market price beats your average, profit/loss accurately.

How to use

  1. List each purchase — Shares + price per share, one per line
  2. Tool sums total cost — shares × price for each purchase
  3. Calculate weighted average — total cost / total shares
  4. View per-share average — Your actual cost basis

Formula

Weighted Average = Σ(shares_i × price_i) / Σ(shares_i)

NOT simple average of prices (which is wrong if quantities differ).

Tips

  • Buy in dips: lower prices reduce your average
  • Avoid 'catching falling knives' — stock could keep falling
  • Set rules: buy fixed rupees monthly regardless of price (SIP-style)
  • Track average vs current market — you're profitable when market > average
  • Don't average down losing stocks indefinitely — check fundamentals

FAQs

Is averaging always good?

For quality stocks in temporary dips: yes. For declining businesses: NO — you keep adding to a loser. Verify fundamentals before averaging down.

What is rupee-cost averaging?

Buying fixed rupee amount of stock at regular intervals (e.g., ₹5,000 monthly). Result: more shares when low, fewer when high. Smooths out timing risk.

Does brokerage affect average?

Yes — include brokerage and STT (~0.1%) in total cost. Discount brokers (Zerodha, Groww): ₹20/trade max. Full-service brokers higher.

Average for tax purposes?

India uses FIFO (First In First Out) for capital gains. Average price for accounting is different from tax computation. Consult CA for tax filing.
