What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is India's government-backed savings scheme for girl children launched in 2015. Open to girls under age 10. Parent/guardian deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh annually for 15 years; matures when girl turns 21. Current interest rate 8.2% (highest among small savings). EEE status: deposit, interest, and maturity all tax-free.

How to use

  3. Enter girl's age — Must be 0-10
  4. View 21-year maturity — Plus total deposit and interest

Tips

  • Opens at any post office or designated banks
  • Deposit for 15 years; account stays active till 21 even without further deposits
  • Partial withdrawal at 18 for higher education (50% of previous year balance)
  • Premature closure allowed for marriage at 18

FAQs

Can I open multiple SSY accounts?

Max 2 accounts per family (for two girls). Twin girls counted separately.

Interest revised quarterly or annually?

Quarterly (April, July, Oct, Jan). Current rate is locked for that quarter only.

NRI eligibility?

NRIs cannot open new SSY. If account became NRI after opening, continue but no further deposits.
