What is a YouTube thumbnail downloader?
A YouTube thumbnail downloader lets you see and save the preview image of any public YouTube video. Every video has a thumbnail stored on YouTube's image server in several sizes, from a tiny 120×90 image up to full HD 1280×720. This tool takes a video link, works out the 11-character video ID and shows every size that exists, each with a Download button and a Copy URL button. It works with normal videos, Shorts, live streams and embed links on desktop and mobile.
Creators use it to back up their own thumbnails, marketers and SEO teams use it to study what thumbnails rank in a niche, and editors use it when writing a review or a blog post about a video.
Please note: thumbnails are copyrighted by the people who created them. Use downloaded thumbnails for reference, research, previews or personal use, and ask the creator for permission before reusing someone else's thumbnail in your own videos, ads or products.
How to use this tool
- Copy the video link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy link) or from your browser's address bar.
- Paste it in the box above. Any of these work:
youtube.com/watch?v=ID,youtu.be/ID,youtube.com/shorts/ID,/embed/ID,/live/ID, links with extra parameters such as&t=42sor?si=..., or just the 11-character ID. - Press "Get thumbnails" (or Enter). The available sizes appear with their real pixel dimensions.
- Press Download on the size you want. The image saves as a JPG named after the video ID and size.
- Or press Copy URL to get the direct image link for use in a document or a chat.
How it works: YouTube thumbnail URLs
YouTube serves thumbnails from a predictable address: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/<size>.jpg. The tool reads the video ID from your link and requests these files:
- maxresdefault.jpg — 1280×720 (HD). Only exists when the video was uploaded in HD or has a custom HD thumbnail.
- sddefault.jpg — 640×480 (4:3, may include black bars on 16:9 videos).
- hqdefault.jpg — 480×360 (4:3). Available for almost every video.
- mqdefault.jpg — 320×180 (16:9, no black bars).
- default.jpg — 120×90 (smallest).
When a size does not exist, YouTube returns a small 120×90 grey placeholder instead of an error page. The tool checks the real dimensions of every image it receives and hides any size that comes back as that placeholder, so you never download a useless grey picture.
Worked example: for https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?si=abc the tool extracts the ID dQw4w9WgXcQ and shows all five sizes, with the HD version at 1280×720 from https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg. For the 2005 video jNQXAC9IVRw, which was uploaded long before HD, YouTube has no HD or SD file, so the tool shows the HQ (480×360), MQ and default sizes and tells you which ones are missing.
Use cases
- Back up your own thumbnails if you lost the original design file.
- Competitor and SEO research — collect thumbnails from top-ranking videos in your niche to compare colours, text and faces.
- Blog posts and presentations — show a preview of a video you are reviewing, with credit and a link to the video.
- Design feedback — share the exact image with a designer or client.
- Checking how a thumbnail looks at the small sizes YouTube uses in search and suggested videos.
Tips
- Start with the HD (maxresdefault) version for the best quality; use MQ when you need a 16:9 image without black bars and do not need HD.
- If a thumbnail was changed recently, you may still see the old one for a while because of caching. Try again later.
- Design your own thumbnails at 1280×720 so YouTube can create the HD version.
- Check how your thumbnail reads at 320×180 — that is close to how most viewers see it in search results.
Limitations & notes
The tool only works for public and unlisted videos that have thumbnails on YouTube's image server; private, deleted or region-blocked videos may return nothing. It downloads the existing thumbnail images — it does not download videos, and it cannot produce a bigger resolution than YouTube stores. The images are loaded directly from i.ytimg.com by your browser. If your browser or network blocks the direct download, the image opens in a new tab so you can save it manually. Thumbnails remain the copyright of their creators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
Viewing and saving a thumbnail for reference or personal use is generally fine, but thumbnails are copyrighted by their creators. Do not reuse someone else's thumbnail in your own content or for commercial purposes without permission.
Why is the HD 1280x720 thumbnail missing for some videos?
YouTube only creates the maxresdefault image when the video or its custom thumbnail is available in HD. Older or low-resolution uploads have only the smaller sizes, so the tool hides the missing HD version.
Can I download thumbnails of YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/ID). Shorts use the same thumbnail addresses as normal videos, so all available sizes are shown.
Does this tool work on mobile?
Yes. Copy the link from the YouTube app using Share, paste it here and tap Download. If your phone opens the image instead, long-press it and choose to save the image.
What format are the downloaded thumbnails?
They are JPG images exactly as YouTube stores them, named like youtube-thumbnail-VIDEOID-maxresdefault.jpg. The tool does not re-compress or resize them.
Does MavexTech store the videos or thumbnails I look up?
No. Your browser loads the images straight from YouTube's image server. MavexTech does not upload, store or log the links you paste.
