What is an age calculator?

How exact age is calculated

Age in years is the standard '_completed years_' definition used by most legal systems: if you were born on 15 March 2000 and today is 14 March 2025, you are 24 (not yet 25 since your 25th birthday has not arrived).

The calculator does the following:

1. Subtract birth year from comparison year — gives candidate years
2. Compare months: if the comparison month is before the birth month, subtract 1 from years (birthday not yet reached this year)
3. If months are equal, compare days — if comparison day is before birth day, subtract 1 from years
4. The remaining months and days are computed by adjusting the borrow, accounting for the previous month's actual length (28, 29, 30, or 31 days)

Total days = time difference in milliseconds divided by 86,400,000 (ms per day). Leap years are handled automatically because Date objects in JavaScript account for them. Days until next birthday: find the next occurrence of birth month/day on or after the comparison date.

Examples

• Born 15 January 2000, today 26 May 2026: Age = 26 years, 4 months, 11 days. Total: 9,628 days, 231,072 hours. Next birthday in 234 days.
• Born 29 February 2000 (leap day), checking on 28 February 2025: Age = 24 years, 11 months, 30 days (turns 25 the next day).
• Born 1 January 1990, on 31 December 2024: Age = 34 years, 11 months, 30 days (turns 35 the very next day).
• Duration between two events: From 20 July 1969 (Moon landing) to 26 May 2026 = 56 years, 10 months, 6 days = 20,765 days.

Tips & best practices

• For Indian school admissions, the cutoff date is usually 31 March or 30 September - enter that date in the second field to find your child's official age
• For US drivers' license applications, enter the desired license date to confirm you'll be 16+ on that exact day
• For passport applications, your child's age on the date of application determines validity period (10 years for 16+, 5 years for under 16)

Limitations & notes

The calculator assumes the Gregorian calendar (current standard worldwide since 1582). Dates before 1582 may not align with historical records that used the Julian calendar. Time zones are not considered - if you were born at 11 PM local time and the comparison date is in a different time zone, the day count may be off by 1. For legal documents requiring time-zone-specific age, use the date as recorded on the official document.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator handle leap years?

Leap years are handled automatically. February 29 birthdays celebrate their 'real' birthday on Feb 29 in leap years and most countries treat March 1 as their legal anniversary in non-leap years. The day count uses actual elapsed days, so leap days are included.

Why does my age show one day less than I expected?

Age in years uses the completed years definition: until your birthday this year passes, you are still your previous age. If today is the same date as your birth, you are exactly your new age. The day before your birthday, you are still one year younger.

Can I calculate someone's age in the past?

Yes - enter the date you want to find their age on in the second field. Examples: 'How old was my grandfather when my parent was born?' or 'How old will I be on my 25th wedding anniversary?'

Is the days-until-next-birthday accurate during leap years?

Yes - the calculator uses the actual calendar including leap year February 29. A person born July 15 will see the same 'days until next birthday' regardless of whether the current year is a leap year (Feb 29 affects only the start of the year).

Does this work for finding duration between two events?

Yes - enter the first event date as 'birth date' and second event date as 'calculate on'. The years, months, days, total months, total days, and total hours fields all show the precise duration between them.

Why does total months not always equal years times 12?

Total months counts every complete month between dates. If you are 24 years and 4 months old, that is 24 x 12 + 4 = 292 months. The days remainder (e.g. 11 days) is shown separately because it does not complete the next month.

Is my date of birth stored anywhere?

No - this calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your date never leaves your device, is never logged, and disappears when you close the tab. We do not store any personal data from this tool.
