CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Convert CGPA to percentage with the CBSE × 9.5 formula or your university’s formula, convert percentage back to CGPA, and average SGPAs into a CGPA.
Percentage
What is a CGPA to percentage calculator?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the grade average shown on CBSE Class 10 report cards from the CCE years and on most Indian university transcripts. Many job applications, scholarship forms and foreign university portals still ask for a percentage, so you need to convert CGPA to percentage using the formula of the body that issued your marksheet. This calculator applies the CBSE formula (CGPA × 9.5) by default, offers common university formulas, converts a percentage back to CGPA, and averages semester SGPAs into a CGPA using credits.
The important point: there is no single national formula. Each board or university decides its own conversion, usually printed on the back of the grade card or in an official circular. Always use the formula from your own institution.
How to use the calculator
- Pick a tab — CGPA → Percentage, Percentage → CGPA, or SGPA → CGPA.
- Choose the conversion formula your board or university uses, or enter a custom multiplier and offset.
- Enter your CGPA (or percentage). The result updates instantly, and the CGPA tab also shows the result under every built-in formula for comparison.
- For SGPA → CGPA, enter each semester’s SGPA and its total credits. Add or remove semesters as needed.
- Copy the result with the copy button to paste into a form or email.
CGPA to percentage formulas
- CBSE (Class 10, CCE scheme): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE explains the 9.5 factor as the average of the subject-wise percentages of students who scored the top grade point over several years. CBSE issued CGPA only for Class 10 during the CCE period; from the 2018 board exams onward, results show marks, so this formula is for older certificates.
- CGPA × 10: used by universities whose regulations state that percentage equals CGPA multiplied by 10.
- (CGPA − 0.5) × 10: the conversion published by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) for its CGPA/CPI.
- (CGPA − 0.75) × 10: the equivalence used by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, for its CBCS scheme.
- Custom: enter any formula of the form (CGPA − offset) × multiplier.
Worked example: a CGPA of 8.6 gives
- CBSE: 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.70%
- × 10: 86.00%
- (8.6 − 0.5) × 10 = 81.00%
- VTU: (8.6 − 0.75) × 10 = 78.50%
The same CGPA can therefore produce percentages more than 7 points apart, which is why the formula matters.
Percentage to CGPA
The reverse is simply the inverse of the chosen formula: CGPA = percentage ÷ multiplier + offset. For the CBSE formula, 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95. With the VTU formula, 85% gives 85 ÷ 10 + 0.75 = 9.25. If the result is above 10, that percentage cannot be reached under the selected formula.
SGPA to CGPA with credits
Most universities calculate CGPA as a credit-weighted average of semester SGPAs:
CGPA = ∑(SGPA × credits) ÷ ∑(credits)
The calculator loads a four-semester example: SGPAs 8.2, 8.6, 7.9 and 9.1 with 22, 24, 23 and 21 credits. Credit points = 180.4 + 206.4 + 181.7 + 191.1 = 759.6, total credits = 90, so CGPA = 759.6 ÷ 90 = 8.44. A simple average of the four SGPAs would give 8.45 — close here, but the gap grows when credits differ a lot between semesters. If you leave every credits box blank, the tool uses the simple average.
Tips
- Look for the conversion formula on the reverse of your grade card or transcript before using any calculator.
- If a form asks for “percentage as per university norms”, attach the university’s conversion circular if you have it.
- For applications abroad, many universities use credential evaluators (such as WES) that recalculate grades with their own method; a converted percentage is only indicative.
- Keep two decimal places, as most institutions do, and do not round up a CGPA before converting.
Limitations and notes
This tool covers 10-point grading scales. Some universities use different formulas for different grade ranges or batches, or publish a lookup table instead of a formula; use the custom option or the official table in those cases. The calculator does not decide which formula is officially valid for you — your board or university does.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert CBSE CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.6 equals 8.6 x 9.5 = 81.7%. This formula applies to CBSE Class 10 results issued under the CCE grading scheme.
What is the VTU formula for CGPA to percentage?
VTU uses Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. A CGPA of 8.6 therefore equals 78.5%.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the formula your board or university uses. Under the CBSE formula, divide the percentage by 9.5, so 85% equals a CGPA of about 8.95.
How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?
Multiply each semester SGPA by that semester total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. If all semesters have equal credits, this is the same as a simple average.
Why do different calculators give different percentages for the same CGPA?
Because boards and universities use different conversion formulas. The same 8.6 CGPA is 81.7% under the CBSE formula, 86% under CGPA x 10, 81% under (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 and 78.5% under the VTU formula. Always use your own institution formula.
Is CGPA x 9.5 valid for university degrees?
Not automatically. The 9.5 factor was defined by CBSE for its Class 10 grades. Universities set their own rules, so check your university regulations or grade card.
