Length Converter
Convert between meters, centimeters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, miles. All length units.
What is length conversion?
Length conversion translates a measurement from one unit (like meters) to another (like feet) using fixed mathematical ratios. The need arose because the world uses two main measurement systems: the Metric System (used by 95% of the world’s population including Europe, India, China, Brazil) and the Imperial/US Customary System (used primarily in the US, UK still mixes both). Length units span from atomic scale (angstroms, picometers) to astronomical (light-years, parsecs). For everyday use, we need conversions between meters/feet (for height, room dimensions), kilometers/miles (for distance, driving), and centimeters/inches (for product dimensions, screen sizes). This converter handles all common length units instantly with full precision.
How to use this tool
- Enter the value — The number you want to convert. Can be decimal (1.75) or whole number (170).
- Select ‘from’ unit — Choose the unit the value is currently in – meters, cm, mm, km, inches, feet, yards, miles, or nautical miles.
- Read all conversions — All other units update instantly with the equivalent value. Scroll to find the one you need.
Common length conversion factors
All length conversions use exact ratios defined by international standards:
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly (defined by international agreement in 1959)
- 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm
- 1 yard = 3 feet = 0.9144 m
- 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 1,609.344 m
- 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m (used in maritime and aviation)
- 1 meter = 100 cm = 1,000 mm = 0.001 km
- 1 km = 0.62137 miles = 1,094 yards
Worked example: convert 5 feet 9 inches to centimeters:
- 5 feet = 5 × 30.48 = 152.4 cm
- 9 inches = 9 × 2.54 = 22.86 cm
- Total = 152.4 + 22.86 = 175.26 cm
Examples
- 5’10” to cm: 70 inches × 2.54 = 177.8 cm (average male height in US)
- 1 mile to km: 1.609 km (running, cycling distance)
- 10 km to miles: 6.214 miles (popular 10K race distance)
- 32 inch TV to cm: 81.28 cm (diagonal screen size)
- 200 m sprint in feet: 656 feet
- NM to km for sailing: 50 nautical miles = 92.6 km
- House plan 2,500 sq ft (linear length ~158 ft): 158 ft = 48.16 m
Tips & best practices
- For height, US uses feet+inches (5’10”) while Europe uses cm (178). Memorize: 5’0” = 152cm, 5’6” = 168cm, 6’0” = 183cm
- Convert between Indian feet/inches and meters for property listings: 1,000 sq ft = ~93 sq meters
- For furniture shopping, IKEA sells in cm globally but US sites use inches – always convert before ordering
- 1 km = 0.62 miles (slightly less than 2/3) – mental shortcut: 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph
- For race distances: 5K = 3.1 miles, 10K = 6.2 miles, Half Marathon = 13.1 miles (21.1 km), Marathon = 26.2 miles (42.2 km)
- Pilots and sailors use nautical miles (1.852 km / 1.151 statute miles) – based on 1 minute of latitude
- Astronauts use the metric system in space – SpaceX, NASA all use meters and kilometers
Limitations & notes
The calculator uses exact international conversion factors. Some historical or regional units (Indian ‘gaj’ = ~0.9 yard, German ‘Meile’, Scandinavian ‘mil’) are not included – they vary by region. For precise scientific work involving multiple unit conversions, use scientific software (Wolfram Alpha, MATLAB) that handles uncertainty propagation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many centimeters are in a foot?
Exactly 30.48 cm. This is by international definition since 1959: 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, and 1 foot = 12 inches. Before 1959 there were small differences between US and Imperial inches but now the inch is the same worldwide.
Which countries use the metric system?
Almost all of them – 95%+ of the world’s population. The notable exceptions are the United States (uses Imperial), and Liberia and Myanmar (also Imperial). The UK officially adopted metric in 1965 but still uses miles for roads and pints for beer.
Why do pilots use nautical miles?
A nautical mile equals 1 minute of latitude (1/60 of a degree). This is super useful for navigation because you can read distances directly off a chart by counting latitude minutes. 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km = 1.151 statute miles.
How accurate is this conversion?
Exact for fundamental conversions defined by international agreement (inch/cm, foot/m, mile/km, etc.). The browser handles up to 15-17 significant digits of precision. For everyday use, more than enough precision.
What’s the easiest way to convert mentally?
Memorize a few anchor points: 1 inch ≈ 2.5 cm, 1 foot ≈ 30 cm, 1 yard ≈ 1 m, 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km. For most quick conversions these are accurate enough. To go from km to miles: multiply by 0.6 (or divide by ~1.6).
What’s a parsec and why isn’t it here?
A parsec is an astronomical unit equal to 3.26 light-years (about 30.8 trillion km). It’s used for measuring stellar distances. Star Wars famously misuses it as a measure of time. We didn’t include it because daily users rarely need to convert it – if you need parsec/light-year conversions, NASA’s tools are ideal.
Are Imperial and US Customary the same?
Mostly but not exactly. Length units (inch, foot, mile) are identical between modern UK Imperial and US Customary. However US fluid ounces are larger than UK ones (35.5 ml vs 28.4 ml), and US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than UK gallon (4.546 L). For length you don’t need to worry about which system.
