What does it mean to sign a PDF online?

To sign a PDF online means adding an image of your handwritten signature, your typed name in a signature-style font, or a date stamp onto the pages of a PDF document. This free MavexTech Sign PDF tool lets you draw your signature with a mouse, finger or stylus, type it, or upload a photo of your signature, then click on any page to place it exactly where it belongs. You can place several signatures and initials across different pages, add a date, and download the signed file.

The whole process runs in your browser with pdf.js (to show the pages) and pdf-lib (to write the new PDF). Your document is never uploaded. The typed signature fonts (Great Vibes, Dancing Script and Satisfy) are loaded from Google Fonts, which needs no account or key.

How to sign a PDF

  1. Upload the PDF — click the box or drag your file onto it. Every page is shown below the signature panel.
  2. Create your signature — draw it in the box (choose pen colour and width), type your name and pick a style, or upload a signature image. For a scanned signature on white paper, keep "Make white background transparent" ticked.
  3. Click "Use this signature" — a preview appears, showing it is ready to place.
  4. Click on the page — the signature is placed centred where you click. Drag it to move it, drag the blue corner to resize it, or click × to remove it. Click again on any page to add more copies.
  5. Add a date or initials — open the "Date / text" tab, edit the text (today's date is filled in), click "Use this signature" and place it.
  6. Download — click "Download signed PDF" to save yourfile-signed.pdf.

How the signature is positioned

Each placement is stored as a fraction of the page you see on screen. When you download, the tool converts it to PDF points (1 point = 1/72 inch) using the page's real size. For example, on an A4 page (595.28 × 841.89 pt) a signature placed at 60% across and 85% down with a width of 25% of the page becomes a box 148.8 pt wide (about 52.5 mm) starting 357.2 pt from the left edge. Because PDF coordinates start at the bottom-left corner while the screen starts at the top-left, the tool flips the vertical axis: y = page height − (top + box height).

Pages that are stored rotated (90°, 180° or 270°) and pages with an offset crop box are handled too: the position is mapped through the page's rotation and the image is drawn rotated by the same angle, so the signature appears upright exactly where you placed it. The signature is embedded as a transparent PNG, and the original page content is copied untouched.

When to use it

  • Signing rental agreements, offer letters, NDAs and consent forms sent as PDFs.
  • Adding initials to every page of a contract and a full signature on the last page.
  • Signing application forms, declarations and undertakings before emailing them back.
  • Stamping "Received on" or "Approved" with a date on invoices and delivery challans.

Tips

  • Draw slowly and a little larger than you need; the signature is trimmed automatically and stays sharp when you shrink it.
  • For a natural look, sign with dark blue ink colour, as on paper.
  • Photograph a signature on plain white paper in good light and keep the transparent option ticked so the paper colour disappears.
  • Zoom out in your browser to see a full page at once while placing the signature.
  • Check the downloaded PDF in your usual reader before sending it.

Limitations & notes

This tool adds a visual signature (an electronic signature image). It does not create a certificate-based digital signature (such as a DSC or Aadhaar eSign), so it cannot prove who signed or lock the document against changes. Some official filings require a certified digital signature; check what the receiver accepts. Password-protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be modified in the browser. Existing digital signatures in a PDF become invalid once any change is made. Very large PDFs with hundreds of pages may render slowly on phones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to sign a PDF with this tool?

Yes. The PDF and your signature stay on your device. Pages are rendered and the signed file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.

Is a signature added this way legally valid?

An image signature is an electronic signature and is accepted for many everyday documents, but some legal and government processes require a certified digital signature such as a DSC or Aadhaar eSign. Check with the person or authority receiving the document.

Can I sign multiple pages?

Yes. After creating a signature, click on as many pages as you need. Each click adds another copy, and you can mix signatures, initials and date stamps.

How do I remove the white background from my signature photo?

Use the Upload image tab and keep Make white background transparent ticked. Near-white pixels become transparent so only the ink appears on the page.

Will the original text and quality of my PDF change?

No. The original pages are kept as they are and the signature is added as a new image layer on top. Text stays selectable and the file is not re-compressed.

Why can't I sign my PDF?

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be edited in the browser. Remove the protection with the password first, then sign the unlocked copy.

Can I add the date next to my signature?

Yes. Open the Date / text tab, where today's date is filled in automatically. Edit it if needed, click Use this signature and click on the page to place it.
