What is a PDF to PNG converter?

A PDF to PNG converter renders each page of a PDF document as a PNG image. PNG is lossless, so text, lines, tables and charts stay perfectly crisp with no JPG blur around letters – which makes PNG the best image format for pages that are mostly text or graphics. This free MavexTech PDF to PNG converter lets you choose the resolution (72, 144 or 216 DPI), convert all pages or only a range, keep a white background or make it transparent, and download pages one by one or together as a ZIP. It uses Mozilla's open-source pdf.js engine inside your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded anywhere.

How to convert PDF to PNG

  1. Choose your PDF. Click the box or drop a PDF onto it. All pages are rendered at the current settings immediately.
  2. Pick the resolution. 1x (72 DPI) for quick previews, 2x (144 DPI) for sharp on-screen use, 3x (216 DPI) for zooming in or printing.
  3. Choose the background. White behaves like paper. Transparent leaves every area the PDF does not paint see-through – useful for diagrams, signatures and logos you will place on coloured slides.
  4. Limit the pages if needed. Leave Pages empty for all pages, or type a range such as 1-3, 5 or 4- (page 4 to the end). Click Convert PDF to PNG after changing settings.
  5. Download. Save any single page, all pages one by one, or every page in one ZIP file named after your PDF.

How it works: points, DPI and pixels

PDF pages are measured in points, and 1 point is 1/72 of an inch. At a scale of 1x, one point becomes one pixel, which equals 72 DPI. The tool multiplies the page size by the scale you choose:

pixels = page size in points × scale  and  DPI = 72 × scale

Page1x (72 DPI)2x (144 DPI)3x (216 DPI)
A4, 595 × 842 pt595 × 842 px1190 × 1684 px1785 × 2526 px

Slide, 400 × 300 pt400 × 300 px800 × 600 px1200 × 900 px

Worked example. A three-page A4 PDF (595 × 842 pt) converted at 2x gives three PNGs of 1190 × 1684 px, named yourfile-page-1.png to yourfile-page-3.png. If you enter the range 2-3 with 1x scale and a transparent background, you get two 595 × 842 px PNGs whose empty margins have an alpha value of 0. These exact sizes and names are what the tool produced when we tested it. Fractional sizes are rounded down, so an A4 page stored as 595.28 × 841.89 pt becomes 1190 × 1683 px at 2x.

Behind the scenes pdf.js parses the PDF, draws each page's text, vector paths and embedded images onto a canvas at the chosen scale, and the canvas is saved as PNG. Pages are processed one at a time so that long documents do not freeze the page.

Use cases

  • Slides and reports: drop a chart or table page into PowerPoint, Google Slides or a blog post as a sharp image.
  • Social media and messaging: share a page of a menu, brochure or certificate as an image that previews instantly.
  • Documentation: capture a page of a manual or invoice for a support ticket.
  • Design work: export a vector logo or diagram from a PDF with a transparent background.
  • Thumbnails: create a cover image of the first page with range 1 at 1x.

Tips

  • 2x is the best default: text stays crisp on high-density phone and laptop screens.
  • 3x files can be large. A simple text page stays fairly small, but a page full of photos can run to several MB as PNG; use PDF to JPG for photo-heavy pages.
  • Only need the photos inside the PDF, not whole pages? Use Extract Images from PDF.
  • Check how many pages a file has with the PDF Page Counter, or cut out pages first with Split PDF.
  • If a transparent PNG looks black in some viewer, that viewer is showing alpha as black; it is still transparent when placed in a design tool.

Limitations and notes

Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first; the tool shows a message instead of guessing passwords. Transparent mode only affects areas the PDF leaves unpainted – many scanned PDFs and exported documents paint a white rectangle behind each page, which stays white. Very large page formats at 3x (for example A0 posters) can exceed the browser's canvas limit; choose a lower resolution in that case. Rendering is done by pdf.js 3.11.174, loaded from the cdnjs CDN, and rare PDFs using unusual fonts may render slightly differently from Adobe Acrobat. The ZIP option loads the JSZip library from cdnjs on first use. Your PDF itself is processed only on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG or JPG better for converting PDF pages?

PNG is better for pages with text, tables, charts and line drawings because it is lossless and keeps edges crisp. JPG gives smaller files for pages that are mostly photographs.

What DPI should I choose?

2x (144 DPI) is the best choice for most screens and documents. Use 1x (72 DPI) for small previews and 3x (216 DPI) when you need to zoom in or print the image.

Can I convert only some pages of my PDF?

Yes. Type page numbers or ranges in the Pages field, for example 1-3, 5 or 4- for page 4 to the end. Leave it empty to convert every page.

How do I get a transparent background?

Choose Transparent in the Background setting before converting. Areas the PDF does not paint become fully transparent. If the PDF itself contains a white page background, that white stays.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened and rendered by pdf.js inside your browser. Only the pdf.js and JSZip program files are downloaded from a public CDN; your document never leaves your device.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Remove the password in a PDF reader where you know the password, then convert the unlocked copy.

How are the PNG files named?

Each file is named after your PDF plus the page number, for example report-page-1.png. The ZIP file is named report-png.zip.
